Dodgy Monkey Media

Stephen Andrews
This is Stephen Andrews, the owner of Dodgy Monkey Media.

Dodgy Monkey Media is the company that produced the Anti-Christ of the Hot Rod World promotional video for Gas Monkey Garage. Stephen Andrews is the person that placed the Spank My Monkey photograph on hot rod forums, to promote a car giveaway at the upcoming SEMA Show. (For more information, see: The Full Story.)

On August 20, 2006, Stephen Andrews, posting under the username "dodgy", spammed the forums of Hotrodders.com with promotional material for a car giveaway at the upcoming SEMA Show.[1]

The promotion was run by Dodgy Monkey Media, for Gas Monkey Garage. The first promotional item posted was a photograph of Richard Rawlings, owner of Gas Monkey Garage, and his shop manager. They were posing in women's thong underwear imprinted with the slogan "Spank My Monkey".

"Spanking the monkey" is a slang phrase for male masturbation,[2][3] similar to "choking the chicken" or "flogging the dolphin". The phrase "Spank My Monkey" is the equivalent of the phrases "Jerk Me Off" or "Masturbate Me".

Andrews also posted a link to Gas Monkey Garage's Anti-Christ of the Hot Rod World promotional video, which had been produced by Dodgy Monkey Media. The video included shots of drinking and driving, urinating in the street, and a now-famous scene in which Richard Rawlings declared that he was "The Anti-Christ of the Hot Rod World". (For more information, see: Anti-Christ of the Hot Rod World promotional video.)

Dodgy Monkey Media

The car to be given away at the upcoming SEMA Show was a 1931 Ford which was similar, if not identical to the 1931 Ford Rat Rod driven by Rawlings in the Bullrun rally.[4] This was most likely connected to SEMA's efforts to market to the youth-driven "rat rod" automotive hobby, which they had identified as an "emerging youth culture trend" that automotive marketers should "take advantage of".[5] (For more information, see: SEMA.)

Andrews then said that profits from the giveaway would be given to charity, and that he needed the forum members' "help" in selecting a charity. Andrews suggested a children's charity.[6]

Investigating Stephen Andrews
The marketing campaign was quickly identified by the Hotrodders.com forum leadership. In consideration of the Anti-Christ of the Hot Rod World shop video, the "charity" tactic, and especially the "odd" promotional photograph, Hotrodders.com immediately opened an investigation into Stephen Andrews and Dodgy Monkey Media.

Stephen Andrews was discovered to have posted on other sites under the same "dodgy" username, including the forums for the Gumball 3000 automotive rally, in which he had driven, and NobleForums.com, forums for owners of "Nobles", 6-figure British sports cars. Stephen Andrews had made hundreds of public forum posts about his life and his marketing ventures. He discussed his marketing company Dodgy Monkey Media, and his production of the Anti-Christ of the Hot Rod World video.[7]

Stephen Andrews is a wealthy automotive marketer based in the UK and Texas. He knows Richard Rawlings, the owner of Gas Monkey Garage, through their participation in celebrity car rallies such as the Bullrun and the Gumball 3000, a cross-country rally which went from New York to the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. Rawlings is a spokesman for the Bullrun rally, and a prominent participant in the Gumball 3000. The Bullrun, whose logo appears between Richard's legs in the Spank My Monkey photograph, describes itself as: "the most glamorous and high profile of the new breed of high-end 'luxury lifestyle' automotive rallies", and claims to bring together "a celebrity strewn cast of characters and 'petrosexuals' for an unforgettable adventure".[8] (For more information, see: The Bullrun.)

In the photo below, Stephen Andrews is seen with his Noble M400 sports car in the 2006 Gumball 3000 rally. En route to the Playboy Mansion, Andrews is posing with his Gumball 3000 "co-pilot", Playboy model Jessica Kramer.

The Discovery Channel
On February 2, 2006, Stephen Andrews had posted on NobleForums.com, asking if anyone had "a contact at The Discovery Channel".[9]

Richard Rawlings of Gas Monkey Garage would later be filmed in episodes of Overhaulin', aired by The Learning Channel, which, like The Discovery Channel, is owned by Discovery Communications. On GasMonkeyGarage.com, site visitors were encouraged to "watch for Gas Monkey Garage on episodes of Overhaulin' on The Discovery Channel". (For more information, see: The Learning Channel.)

On July 24, 2006, Andrews posted again on NobleForums.com, saying that he has "started a production company", and that he was "looking for a little bit of feedback" on the ill-fated Anti-Christ of the Hot Rod World promotional video.[10] On August 20, 2006, Andrews would post the video, and the Spank My Monkey photograph, on the Hotrodders Bulletin Board as part of the Spank My Monkey marketing promotion. (For more information, see: SEMA.)

Pulled from the Air
Hotrodders.com appealed to SEMA, who was hosting the car giveaway, and Discovery Communications, who featured Gas Monkey Garage on Overhaulin' on The Learning Channel. Both refused to confirm or deny having a relationship with Stephen Andrews or Dodgy Monkey Media.

However, SEMA would cancel the car giveaway at the upcoming SEMA Show, and Discovery would pull Gas Monkey Garage's episodes of Overhaulin' from the air. (For more information, see: SEMA and The Learning Channel.)
