In late August of 2006, the Spank My Monkey online marketing campaign was launched, to promote a car giveaway at the upcoming SEMA Show.[1] The promotion involved Gas Monkey Garage, Coker Tire, Newstalgia Wheel, SEMA (the Specialty Equipment Market Association), and The Learning Channel. (For more information, see: The Full Story.)

Among the promotional material was a photograph of two men wearing women's black thong underwear imprinted with the phrase "Spank My Monkey", and a video in which Richard Rawlings, the owner of Gas Monkey Garage, declared that he was "The Anti-Christ of the Hot Rod World". (For more information, see: Spank My Monkey photograph and Richard Rawlings.)

Spank My Monkey/Anti-Christ

Here's an analysis of the crucial scene of the video, where Richard Rawlings declares his status as "The Anti-Christ of the Hot Rod World".

In addition to the "Anti-Christ" declaration, the video featured several other "badass" scenes, including: welding without protection, urinating in the street, and drinking and driving.

When the Anti-Christ of the Hot Rod World promotional video was posted on the forums of Hotrodders.com, the appalled forum members immediately took action. The video was remixed into a parody, and posted on the popular video-sharing site YouTube.com.[2]

When Gas Monkey Garage noticed that a parody of their promotional video had been placed on YouTube, they edited the original video, removing the scene where Richard Rawlings declares that he is "The Anti-Christ of the Hot Rod World". The edited video was placed back on YouTube, where it can still be viewed: edited Anti-Christ video. (04/18/07 -- UPDATE: video has been changed to "private" status on YouTube.)

With the "Anti-Christ" scene deleted from the video, Gas Monkey Garage then took legal action to get the Hotrodders.com parody video pulled from YouTube. The parody video was clearly legal, and specifically protected by free speech laws (similar parodies exist on common late-night television talk shows). Nevertheless, using a legal scare tactic, Gas Monkey Garage was able to pressure YouTube into removing the video. Shortly thereafter, Hotrodders.com uploaded the parody video to a specialty free speech server, where it remains today. (For more information, see: Parody and the Law.)
