- The "Spank My Monkey/Anti-Christ" Campaign
In an attempt to market to the youth-oriented "rat rod" automotive subculture, hotrodding forums were spammed with a now-famous photograph of two men wearing thongs imprinted with the slogan "Spank My Monkey", and a promotional video starring "The Anti-Christ of the Hot Rod World". Investigation tied the promotion to SEMA, the Specialty Equipment Market Association, and Discovery Communications, parent company of The Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel. After their stealth marketing campaign was exposed, Discovery Communications tried to use corporate legal tactics to silence SpankMyMarketer.com. When our free speech was threatened by this media giant, the Electronic Frontier Foundation backed us with pro-bono legal representation.
